Concepts Editorial: CRANIO’s Olympian Effort

Riley H. Lunn, D.D.S., Editor

Volume 26 Issue 4 October 2008

Editorial:

The exciting Beijing summer Olympics have ended and the symbolic Olympic flame has begun its journey to London, England. Our staff at the CRANIO journal has begun our own transfer of journal knowledge into a user-friendly format that will allow downloadable files any time or place that you have an Internet connection. We hope to be up and running with a new website early in 2009. This will be the single most significant change in the journal’s 26-year history.
You, the subscriber, will need to notify our office if you want to:
•    Continue receiving your journal in print format only by mail (as in the past);
•    Stop your traditional subscription and opt to receive the journal online only; or
•    Decide to take both a traditional subscription and add the online subscription. (See page A-11 for a convenient form that can be faxed or mailed.)
NOTE: There is a fee increase of only 50% if you select to receive the journal as both print and online.
You can choose either a print OR online subscription at the same price. If your subscription is current and we do not hear from you, then we will continue to mail your print copy as always.
CRANIO is working with a local company, Coptix,
to create a completely new website that will be more subscriber friendly. As always, you have shopping cart availability with accessibility to the past 12 years of CRANIO’s full articles. Earlier issues may be available online at a later date (we are working to see if this is
feasible), but for now they can be ordered via fax (423-490-0791), e-mail (contact@cranio.com, or phone order (800-624-4141).
A special thank-you to Scott Holstad, whose attention to detail has improved the final product.
Another eminent improvement is that we will soon be using eJournalPress for the manuscript submission and review process. The reviews will still be doubleblind to reviewers and authors. Reviewers will be able to respond to the manuscripts from any location where they have an Internet connection. They will be able to suggest changes and makes comments and send those suggestions and comments in by simply using their mouse to click to send.
Through this innovative process, all changes will be made easier and faster and more efficiently. Hopefully, the lag time between a working manuscript and a published article will be significantly reduced. Among the medical journals using eJournalPress is JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association. Look for these changes to be of benefit to authors, reviewers, and subscribers.
Our goal of being online by early 2009 is a different one from the Olympic goal. Like the Olympic athlete, we have to overcome many obstacles. However, the course has been run before and thanks to those professionals supporting us, we hope to clear the hurdles with ease and speed. Wish us well and help us celebrate the challenges we are undertaking.
